Learn how optical 3D metrology is applied in the Energy and Power Industry

Made-to-Measure Rotor Blades

Rotor blades for wind turbines are a core business activity of the Magdeburg-based wind power plant manufacturer Enercon. Highest standards of quality and dimensional stability are applied to their production, a factor which has an influence not only on the further processing and assembly of the rotor blades, but also on the efficiency of the entire wind turbine. A reliable quality control throughout the entire production process is therefore essential. Measurement of the rotor blade flanges, the sensitive interface between rotor blade and hub, is carried out with AICON‘s portable coordinate measuring machine MoveInspect DPA.

Rotor Blade Testing at the IWES

Founded in 2009, the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES in Bremerhaven/Germany is specialized in research projects concerning renewable energy. Since 2011, the IWES gets benefit from AICON’s optical measuring system MoveInspect HF, which allows real-time monitoring of results even for a prolonged testing period and offers significant advantages in comparison to commonly used cable pull potentiometers.

Measurements Under Challenging Conditions

Quality and dimensional accuracy are the be-all and end-all of offshore wind turbine manufacturing, because individual system components are assembled on the open sea. Offshore deployment of staff and installation ships is costly and expenses must be kept as low as possible.
